![]() It was then that Creeping Death was released as a single from the band’s second album Ride The Lightning (1984) – on the reverse side were cover versions of DIAMOND HEAD’s Am I Evil and Blitzkrieg by the band of the same name and was entitled Garage Days Revisited. To truly talk about Garage Inc., one must go all the way back to November 23rd 1984, exactly fourteen years and one day before the album would commercially appear. Just over two months later, all of them would be released on arguably the greatest covers album of all time… As was the band’s style then, the set included a few cover songs, opening with their version of Breadfan from Welsh proto-metal band BUDGIE, an acoustic rendition of the MISFITS’ Last Caress and a small jam session before closing song Creeping Death that included a section of the traditional Irish pub track Whiskey in The Jar. At the Coors Ampitheater in Chula Vista, California, METALLICA are playing the final date of their Poor Re-Touring Me tour, in support of seventh album Reload that emerged earlier on in the year. on Don’t Look Back: Bob Dylan vs.It is September 13th, 1998. The band described the sessions in their own words on the rear sleeve. The band thanks “Ted Nugent for studio time.” The Nuge had finished recording his If You Can’t Lick ‘Em…Lick ‘Em album early and gifted Metallica that studio time!Īlthough the album was recorded in a top-notch professional studio, the songs were rehearsed in Lars’s garage. There is an unlikely name lurking in that list. Cliff, however, is mentioned at the top of the thank you list. Forced to soldier on with a new bass player, the band kept a light-hearted vibe, referring to Jason as “Master J. Obviously, Garage Days is the first Metallica record since Cliff Burton passed away. In reality, it’s the product of a band in mourning. ![]() Despite being around to buy the original EP, I feel like I’m rediscovering Garage Days in the way that Metallica intended. The listener must physically flip the record for the final three songs. “Helpless” and “The Small Hours” occupy Side One. The listening experience is quite different with vinyl. Both sides of the tape included all 5 songs uninterrupted. My childhood copy of Garage Days was on cassette. ![]() It’s interesting to hear this classic EP on vinyl. My local shop was stocked with the orange vinyl that was exclusively available to indie retailers. I typically prefer black but am a firm believer in supporting independent record stores. The name had been altered to The $9.98 CD to reflect this reality. Amazon offered the record for $12.98, a virtually unheard of price in the world of modern vinyl. To Metallica’s credit, they have kept pricing low. There was even a hype sticker instructing fans “DO NOT PAY MORE!!!”ģ0 years later, no one expects to buy a new slab of vinyl under 6 bucks. In 1987, The $5.98 EP- Garage Days Re-Revisited was literally $5.98. All records include a digital download card! Orange vinyl can be purchased at independent record stores. In addition to standard black, picture discs are available directly from the Metallica website. The vinyl edition is pressed in multiple formats. Fans of digital music can purchase the CD in a long-box, just like the eighties! Anyone that still owns a functional tape deck can purchase The $5.98 EP on cassette. Garage Days Re-Revisited is available in multiple formats. To meet this end, Metallica did not disappoint! Instead, the focus is on recreating the listening experience of 1987. Unlike the first three albums, the band opted not to release deluxe editions with bonus material. Metallica have been truly exhaustive in their ongoing reissue campaign. Furthermore, the songs have been remastered. Now, the artwork and track list have been restored. Although the music is available on Garage Inc., the original EP had been out of print since 1989.
